Brian R. Mitchell
Biography
Brian R. Mitchell is the founder of the Toronto boutique law firm Mitchell LLP. He has over thirty years of legal experience representing businesses and individuals in a wide variety of corporate commercial litigation. Mr. Mitchell handles all aspects of civil and corporate litigation, including for more particularity, shareholder remedies; oppression recourses; and investor dispute and financial services litigation, at both the trial and appellate levels.
In May 2017, Mr. Mitchell was elected as the President of the Montreal Bar. In 2015, he was elected as Treasurer, and subsequently in 2016, as First Councillor for the Montreal Bar. Most recently, in 2019, he completed his mandate as President of the Council of Former Presidents.
Mr. Mitchell also regularly advises business and individual clients on a broad range of legal and political matters. In April 2008, Mr. Mitchell was appointed to the Board of Directors of CBC/Radio-Canada and served on its various subcommittees for a five-year term.
On March 7, 2013, he was reappointed for a second five-year term. In addition, he has served on the Audit Committee for CBC Radio Canada and was appointed Chair for the last three years of his mandate. In addition, he served as a trustee on the CBC Pension Board of Trustees from 2008 until 2016. Prior to establishing Mitchell LLP, Brian Mitchell served as the co-founding partner in 1991 of Mitchell Gattuso, a Montréal law firm with an extensive corporate practice.
Mr. Mitchell graduated from St. Andrews College, Aurora, Ontario. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (cum laude) degree in History and Literature from Harvard University. He subsequently attended the Faculty of Law at McGill University, where he was awarded the 125th Anniversary Entrance Scholarship, and in 1985 graduated from the National Program with a Bachelor of Common Law and a Bachelor of Civil Law degrees. He has been a member of the Ontario Bar as well as the Quebec Bar since 1987.
